SNAM

SNAM is one of Europe’s leading energy infrastructure operators and a key player in the development of sustainable energy systems. With extensive expertise in natural gas transportation, storage, regasification, carbon management, hydrogen technologies and energy integration solutions, SNAM is actively supporting the decarbonisation of hard-to-abate industrial sectors. Through its Research & Technology Centre and dedicated demonstration facilities, SNAM develops and validates innovative technologies aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing energy efficiency and enabling the integration of renewable and low-carbon gases into industrial value chains.

  • Role in ELEKTRA Project

Within the ELEKTRA project, SNAM acts as the industrial demonstration and validation partner for the electrification and decarbonisation technologies developed by the consortium.

For Prototype 1, the electrified methane/top-gas reforming reactor developed by SYPOX, SNAM hosts the demonstration activities at its H2SHIFT facility in Italy. SNAM is responsible for site preparation, integration of the prototype with the existing infrastructure, provision of utilities and safety systems, support to installation and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), and execution of the operational demonstration campaign. SNAM will operate the unit under industrially relevant conditions, collect and analyse performance data, and validate key performance indicators including syngas production, energy efficiency, hydrogen quality, conversion efficiency and system reliability.

In addition, SNAM contributes to the validation of Prototype 3, a plasma-based reactor for the dissociation of CO₂ into CO, enabling carbon circularity through the conversion of captured carbon dioxide into a valuable process gas. The plasma technology is developed by ZEFIRA, while SNAM supports the assessment and validation of the technology from an industrial deployment perspective, contributing to performance evaluation, process integration studies, techno-economic assessment and future scale-up opportunities.
